I remember my first encounter with The Eternal Cylinder in March, when it was still in Early Access. My initial impression was that it was had a sickly sort of gruesome aesthetic, yet there was a beating heart beneath it that caught my attention. Now that I’ve been through the full version, my opinion has changed – that heart is still there, but now I think The Eternal Cylinder’s world is beautiful!

You aren’t going at it alone though. At first, your little Trebhum is by itself, but as players progress through the game they’ll eventually get more added to the group. You’ll only ever take control of one of them, but the rest are good little lemmings and follow the main one around. Generally, survival titles don’t really jive with me. I understand the appeal, but grinding out materials isn’t for me. The Eternal Cylinder features survival elements, albeit on a much more linear scale.

If you’re struggling to follow along, I think that’s the idea. Not a whole lot is revealed in The Eternal Cylinder in regards to whatever the hell is going on at a given moment. For some time, the game is a series of the player following the lead of the narrator. On occasion, a bit is revealed about the nature of this exceedingly bizarre world. The ancient Trehbum created towers that are capable of stopping the Cylinder. For a while, at least. There are a handful of Trebhum tombs and Trebhum tunnels with Trebhum treasures in the secret Trebhum tabernacles for you to unlock. But the overwhelming majority is just plain confusion. 

Not only is this diversity necessary for the player to get past hazardssuch as toxic environments, minions of the Cylinder, or carnivorous free-roaming creatures that swallow trebhums whole, as the game goes on it’s shown that this is not the story of an all-powerful hero, but an experience about the power that comes from cherishing the differences of every member in a community, showcasing how valuable these differences are in helping everyone move forward.

In addition, the world is absolutely stunning and filled with charming flora and creatures roaming each landscape. Even when the cylinder is moving, I often found myself just looking around the world, distracted by the plants blowing trumpet sounds, or the misty forests and colorful night sky with thousands of stars brightening up the sky. It’s often a gorgeous game, and I found myself smashed by the cylinder more than once just because I was looking at the scenery.

At the same time, however, some of the game is kind of a drag. The Eternal Cylinder has a handful of mechanics that I found to be a bit tedious. Having to manage food and water levels, for instance. It was a lot more enjoyable when your sprint ability (the Trebhum rolls really fast like Sonic) was not tied to a nutrition meter. Still, these far outweighed the interesting time I had exploring the Salvador Dali-esque landscapes and running from equally Dali-esque creatures.

It has some weird control issues, and for some reason, it never recorded properly during game capture, but these are minor gripes for such a wildly interesting – and honestly captivating – title. It won’t be for everyone, but if you’re burned out by the humdrum annualized releases, The Eternal Cylinder is worth checking out.
